EDITION 2/2011

from the heart of the team

And so we experience yet another season. Autumn brings along its own beauty and inspiration, and makes one ponder over the reality that time passes quickly. Our journey in life also takes us through different seasons, and the fascination comes in when every person experience it differently, taking something unique out of his / her situation.

On this note I want to add something. The older I seem to get the more intense I experience life’s encounters. I tend to think more about things, question them and somehow end up reflecting about the meaning of it all. It opens up different views and I realise that I might have been wrong about many things but also right about a lot!

Grab this season in your life, experience it in all its intensity and remember that the best way to keep your mind from blowing is to keep it open...

4th Reality – the key to power facilitation
Have you ever wondered why some programs are more effective than others? Why the participants in some programs exude energy and excitement while you can read ‘bored’ on the other group’s faces?

The answer is not locked in a magical mystery – it might be as simple as changing the manner in which you approach the client.

In order for us to fully understand the opening statement, we need to have a closer look at its components:

  • AEL, to quote Heunis (1997), ‘… is a process through which a learner constructs knowledge, skill and value from direct adventure related experiences and in-depth reflection’.
  • And to facilitate, in its basic form, means to help or assist.

To put it in other words, the understanding of a concept becomes easier when AEL is used.

But real ‘power facilitation’ is deeper, more intense. It takes you to the level beyond the next. It lets you experience the 4th Reality…

As TBI is constantly innovating, we decided to incorporate Shadowmatch® as part of our team building strategy. Shadowmatch® is a sophisticated yet user-friendly internet-based system enabling companies to not only accurately recruit new employees but also to develop current employees.

Numerous studies pointed out that when an individual’s previous experience and abilities are in harmony with the task or job at hand, in a given context or environment, success is guaranteed.

With this in mind, Shadowmatch® will be used in certain TBI programmes as a tool to empower individuals and teams by giving them insight into their own behavioural patterns as well as the habitual patterns of the team. It can also be used to create a benchmark of the top performers in a corresponding business environment. This benchmark, which is business and job unique, can be used to recruit and develop individuals for best performance in a job.

what we have been up to

The first ‘Train-the-Trainer’ course for 2011 went extremely well, with representation from privately owned companies as well as the mining industry. Chris and Robbie facilitated the training at the Adventure Training Centre in Oudtshoorn. Nine excited trainees arrived with a good dose of positive attitude and willingness to learn. At the end of the course we are happy to report that the trainees turned out to be well equipped to further grow as facilitators. They were eager to assist their colleagues in their quest to obtain knowledge, skill and value from AEL.

The construction arm of TBI, Adventech, added Kumba Kolomela and Exxaro Matla to its growing list of low ropes course owners. The dream of having a ropes course design- and construction company in TBI is becoming a reality, making our latest projects our 28th and 29th building project respectively.

Adventech, specialises in the design and construction of high- and low ropes courses, supplies belay and safety equipment and manufactures portable props for facilitation. Robbie Verkuyl and Abe Masanabo are ensuring that this labour-intensive division is flourishing.

what do you think?

You have a fox, a chicken and a sack of grain. You must cross a river with only one of them at a time. If you leave the fox with the chicken he will eat it; if you leave the chicken with the grain he will eat it. How can you get all three across safely?
